Ruud advances after long weather delay

As James noted a minute ago, Casper Ruud (8) has beaten Gael Monfils to advance to the third round. After play resumed following a near two-hour weather delay, Monfils managed to force the fourth set into a tiebreak, but Ruud jumped all over him to win it 7-3 and close out the match in four sets.

Ruud will face Shang Juncheng, aka Jerry Shang, next.

Everything that happened on Day 3 of the US Open including Djokovic, Gauff wins (20)

Novak Djokovic (2) has advanced to the third round after his opponent Laslo Djere retired with Djokovic leading 6-4, 6-4, 2-0.

The heat and humidity was affecting both players on Arthur Ashe, each receiving treatment from the trainers at one point, but Djere was in need of more help the further the match progressed. After Djokovic broke his serve in the second game of the third set, Djere flung down his racquet in frustration and went to shake his compatriot's hand.

At the age of 37, Djokovic will be grateful to have had his match cut short. He will face Alexei Popyrin (28) in the third round.

Night has fallen in New York City and Novak Djokovic vs Laslo Djere is taking place indoors on Arthur Ashe, but after a day with temperatures above 90 degrees, it's still not cool enough for comfort.

After the first set, Djokovic had his abs massaged by a trainer while another one looked at his leg. He also utilized ice packs and a cooling air tube.

This Novak Djokovic-Laslo Djere match isn't going to be a repeat of last year's in the third round of the US Open, when Djere won the first two sets.

Djokovic has taken the first set tonight on Arthur Ashe, staying on serve all the way through 5-4 before breaking Djere's serve to love.

If Novak Djokovic facing his Serbian compatriot Laslo Djere at the US Open sounds familiar, that's because this very same match took place last year as well.

Meeting in the third round last year as opposed to the second round today, Djere jumped out to a shocking two-set lead. Exactly no one was surprised, however, when Djokovic found a way to up his game and reel him in, eventually winning 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 en route to lifting his 24th Grand Slam trophy.

Stearns closing in

Kasatkina floats a ball wide for 3-4, then wrists a backhand way past the sideline. At 3-5 with Kasatkina serving, Stearns is two points from victory... And a double fault more than a foot wide gives her two match points...

Tied in the tiebreak

The double faults are catching. A Kasatkina serve pings long off the tape for 1-3. Stearns.

Kasatkina peppers Stearns' backhand with inside-out forehands, and after retrieving some balls with serious heat, Stearns gets a slower, easier one and chips it way long. 3-2, still on serve.

3-3, as Stearns goes long off a regulation forehand down the middle.

Serving for the match again, on the very first point Stearns is in control of the rally, but an inside-out forehand to set up an approach to the net pings off the tape and drifts wide. Kasatkina pumps her first at the good fortune.

At 30-30, Kasatkina zips a forehand into the corner to bring up a break point that would send the second set into a tiebreak. Stearns misses a first serve that thunders down the T, before kicking a second serve out wide — too wide.

Another double fault to concede another break, and at 6-6, it's tiebreak time.
