      13:50 Ascot – Apple Away

ITV Saturday gets under way here at Ascot with the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase over 3m. The is a huge chance for APPLE AWAY who gets weight from all her rivals for Derek Fox and Lucinda Russell. The mare is bang in the mix with a rating of 141 and ran pretty well when second to Grey Dawning at Warwick last time. If she’s a bit more controlled here she should take all the beating.

      14:05 Wincanton – Goshen

ITV also go to Wincanton Saturday for this Grade 2 Kingwell Hurdle over 1m7f. Not much between these. Many will think I’m crazy but GOSHEN might just sparkle here for Niall Houlihan and Gary Moore. Blinkers first time is very interesting and if they work his neck second to Knappers Hill at Sandown last season would put him bang in the mix. Obviously it’s Goshen, so you can’t be confident, but I’ll take the chance.

      14:10 Haydock – Salver

ITV bang in a third track in Haydock and this is the Victor Ludorum Juvenile Hurdle over nearly 2m. Hard to get away from SALVER who is held in huge regard by Gary Moore and has Caoilin Quinn on top who is riding really well. Salver looked very good in the Finale at Chepstow and he gags for heavy ground.

        14:25 Ascot – Irish Hill

Here’s a handicap hurdle over an extended 2m3f. IRISH HILL has been given a real chance here by the handicapper and landed a similar race to this last year off a mark of 128 following a win at Fakenham when rated 122. After a ninth in the Lanzarote my hope is down to 125 and should make a splash as an eachway chance for Paul Nicholls with Freddie Gingell taking off 3lb.

        14:40 Haydock – Butch

The Grade 2 Rendlesham Hurdle over an extended 3m. BUTCH has plenty to find on ratings but he gets some weight from Botox Has and is bang in form. My hope won well at Cheltenham last time and might have scored more easily if delivered later. Sean Bowen rides for Olly Murphy.

          15:00 Ascot – Victtorino

A handicap chase over 3m. VICTTORINO never got involved over a shorter trip at Cheltenham last time but looked an absolute monster in two wins at this track previously. Both those successes came at 3m, the trip here, and he could easily bounce back for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch.

          15:15 Haydock – Iwilldoit

A Grand National Trial Handicap Chase over an extended 3m4f. I’m happy to stick with former Welsh National hero IWILLDOIT for Sam Thomas and Dylan Johnston who takes off a valuable 5lb. My hope is down to a mark of 149 here despite a fine third at Chepstow two runs ago when on 153. I think he’s got a fabulous eachway chance in the mud he loves.

          15:36 Ascot – LHomme Presse

The class race of the day in the Grade 1 Ascot Chase over 2m5f. Pic d’Orhy will run a race here but he’s not as good as L’HOMME PRESSE and as long as the latter doesn’t bounce after the comeback win following a long absence at Lingfield he should score for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch. There should be pace in here with Ahoy Senor also likely to press the lead so my hope’s stamina could be crucial.

So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?

Picking a Winner by Reading the Form

Form is the record of a horse's performance in previous races and is seen by many as a good way of predicting a horse's future performance. Comparing horses' form should enable you to pick the likely best performers in a race.

What is the smartest bet in horse racing? ›

The safest bet you can make is a SHOW bet on the favorite. While it's the most likely to hit, it delivers a small return. If you want to make more money, you need to bet on the more exotic wagers. They include the EXACTA (top two horses in order), the TRIFECTA (top three in order) or the SUPERFECTA (top four in order).

What bet wins the most in horse racing? ›

For all races, the public betting choice, the favorite, wins 30% to 38% of the time. Heavily bet favorites in the 3-5 to 6-5 odds range win at more than 40%.

What is the easiest bet to win in horse racing? ›

The easiest of the so-called exotics to cash on are the EXACTA (pick the first two finishers in one race in exact order) or QUINELLA (pick the first two finishers in one race in either order, though this bet is not widely available), and the DOUBLE (picking the winner of two consecutive races).

What is the luckiest number in horse racing? ›

In the steeplechase, the numbers between 11 and 29 have proved to be the most successful, supplying 12 winners over this period. 35 and 29, 13 and 10 lead the way, however, with these numbers claiming victory twice each so far.

Do horses know they are winning? ›

For a horse, winning means nothing – they don't even understand the concept.

Apart from metropolitan tracks, the handicapper's preferred horses, (number one) won more races than any other number.

How do you know when a horse is going to win? ›

If a horse is uppity and irritable, it might not be ready and will likely lose. But if it's calm and has steady strides, then you can bet that it has a solid chance of dominating its opponents.

What is the most accurate horse handicapper? ›

MPH Pro is one of the friendliest, and most accurate velocity pace handicapping programs ever. It is based on Tom Brohamer's best-selling book, Modern Pace Handicapping, published in 1991 by William Morrow & Company and thought by many to be the premier book on pace handicapping.

Are horse racing tipsters worth it? ›

A good horse tipping service and community like Equus Racing can make that happen for you. A poor horse tipping service on the other hand will make you lose the lot. So carefully choosing which service to use for your betting is very important. Choose a tipping service with a public record of wins and losses.
